Scripture Memorization is key to becoming more Christ-like.

Dallas Willard stresses that Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to Spiritual Formation. "The book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth" (Joshua 1:8).

A new audio tool in CD format for scripture learning has been produced by a group of MPPC folks. It's effective, easy and it works! CDs are available for purchase at the MPPC tape room or at www.masteringgodsword.org

Mothers Together Meets each Tuesday morning: once a month there is a large gathering with an inspiring speaker, the other Tuesdays provide small groups and workshops. Several times a year, there are evening events for parents who can't attend daytime gatherings and we provide summertime play date gatherings with children.

Presbyterian Women have embarked on a new schedule of monthly coffees on the third Thursdays of each month. They have enlisted inspiring teachers that will be of interest to all women. This group of women has been part of the faithful foundation of our church and they welcome all women to attend their events. They also have home group circles that meet monthly to study the Bible, pray and serve local missions partners together.

Wednesday Night Bible Study is a weekly community of women, who study and apply the Bible, pray and share life together. There is a time of shared teaching and individual small group time for discussion and prayer. This group will resume in September.

Wednesday Afternoon Bible Study is a weekly study for women who are looking for a smaller setting and deep discussion., meeting September- May. Class time includes discussion, prayer, sharing, and mutual encouragement, as we grow together in God's plans for our lives.

Home Groups can be an important path to learning about God and forming deep connection with others, and we believe they are a key to spiritual growth. Groups form year round, although we have a special focus on starting new groups each fall. If you would like to join a group, please go to our home group connection page.

Writing Workshops for women provide a safe place for women to reflect and share about their journey with God. Six week groups form several times per year, including a August summer session.

Fitness and Faith class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings is a year-round place for exercise, fun, prayer and friendship. Recently moved to D-11.The 2009 Women's Retreat will be Friday night, January 31st through Sunday noon, February 2nd at Asilomar. Please check back for details about this cherished tradition which is a fun and formative weekend for all generations of women at a beautiful oceanside conference center. Registration will begin November 2008.

Will the Real Samuels Please Stand Up?

I've heard that there's something wrong with youth workers. Seriously wrong. I mean who in their right mind plans to stay up all night at a Lock-In and listen to young people yap? Who with an ounce of sanity voluntarily goes to a youth retreat where the survival conditions rival that of a Navy SEALs boot camp? And don't get me started on driving the church van to mission trips. There is a level in Dante's Inferno comprised only of church vans that have not been maintained since the sixth day of Creation.
And yet there are people who do it. There are people who have eaten every kind of pizza known to man-old pizza, stale pizza, frozen pizza, mushroom pizza. The water in their blood has been permanently replaced by Coca Cola. There are people who volunteer for this stuff!?!
It begs the question. Are youth workers crazy?

There's a story in the Old Testament about a youth worker named Samuel. He comes into the life of a kid named David. Up until that point, David was a nobody. He lived in a society structured by the law of primogeniture and therefore he was so obsolete that even his own father completely forgot about him when Samuel came to visit. When people looked at David, they couldn't get past the drab clothes, the smell of sheep and his overall mediocre look. He was acceptably forgettable.

But when Samuel looked at David, God gave him eyes that allowed him to see past the "nothing" that everyone else saw to the greatness that lied beyond. He was a prophetic seer that saw a diamond when David's own family saw only a rock. And when Samuel entered into David's life he completely transformed the topology of David's tomorrows. When Samuel dared to look beyond, David and destiny collided.

And it's for this reason that all the Samuels in this world do what they do. Are you crazy to want to do youth ministry? NO! The problem with youth workers is that whenever they see the least, the lost, or the left behind something inside them says that there's a winner there that just needs a touch from God. So to all the van drivers, Coke drinkers, pizza downers, cabin stinkers, chubby bunny players-will the real Samuels please stand up?

Blessings,
Kevin Kim

ODC-Shepherd's Village - Family Life

In Shepherd's Village, our children's ministry, we believe that children should have fun while learning about God. In order to do that we're committed to creating relevant, age-appropriate curriculum that is targeted to today's children. We teach the Bible with innovation and creativity. Children learn to apply biblical truths to their everyday lives through small group experiences with a dedicated small group leader. In each classroom, we are committed to putting Christ first as we reach and disciple children for Christ.

We are currently looking for people who are interested in becoming creative communicators in our preschool and elementary classrooms. Creative communicators share the truths of the Bible through lessons in a fun way, and help children learn how to apply the love of God and His word into their lives. Complete lessons are prepared for you and your commitment level can range from once a month to every week; depending on your schedule. Please email Diane Birmingham or call 650.323.8616, to get involved and use your gifts to make a difference in the lives of our children.

Worship: Our Mission - Worship

We worship God because it is the appropriate response to our Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter. Our belief is that all people have a desire to worship something. Our mission is to point worshippers to God and His gift of salvation in Christ. We accomplish this through exuberant, illuminating, and welcoming worship experiences. We rely wholly on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to accomplish this goal.

Therefore we gather to sing, pray, fellowship, and receive God's Word for us through Scripture and the leading of His Spirit. Our joy is in the Lord and not in ourselves.

—Doug Lawrence, Minister of Worship, Emeritus

"... if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way...then you will find your joy in the LORD!"

Bearing Fruit... - Mission

“Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit...”
—John 15:5

Whether through hands-on service activities or through engagement with our mission partners, we believe that our efforts to sow seeds of hope and healing can truly make a difference for God’s kingdom.

Some seeds will quickly grow and yield tangible fruit, as we build homes in Juarez or create libraries in local urban schools. Other seeds may take a generation before they begin to bear fruit, especially as we invest in educating the next generation and develop future leaders in the majority world. But we are confident that God will take our efforts, individually and collectively, and weave them into God’s larger work of redemption and hope for the world in Jesus’ name.

However, the fruit that grows from our involvement in mission is not just found in the outward results of our efforts. Perhaps the greatest fruit is that which grows within each one of us, as our own hearts are shaped, our own lives transformed to be more like Jesus as we Love God, Love People, and Serve the World.

Planting Seeds… - Mission

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of all shrubs and becomes a tree...” -Matthew 13:31-32 At MPPC we believe that every follower of Jesus has a role in God’s life-changing work in the world. Mission for us is more than writing a check or signing up for another activity; mission is about becoming a person who is meaningfully engaged in the world as a follower of Jesus. It's about discovering your part in God's ongoing work to bring hope, healing, compassion and justice in Jesus' name, whether in your own neighborhood or in another part of the world. The ability of our church to make a difference in the world isn’t primarily through our programs or our pocketbooks; it’s through our people as we each discover our place in God’s plan. Through hands-on mission experiences, learning opportunities, personal equipping, and strategic partnerships worldwide, we are committed to developing people who will in turn make a difference in individual lives and in society for God’s glory.

On the road, at the beach, or at home...Enrich your experience each week as we explore the Sermon on the Mount, The World's Greatest Talk, by reflecting on your own upon God's word. For staff recommendations on further reading on The Sermon on the Mount, click here. Secret Generosity - July 12-13
Matthew 6:1-4

Giving to the Needy
"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Beyond Getting Even - July 5-6
Matthew 5:38-48

An Eye For An Eye
"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love For Enemies
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemiesand pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
The Look - June 28-29
Matthew 5:27-32

Adultery
"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Divorce
"It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
Small Words, Huge Impact - June 21-22
Matthew 5:33-37
"Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one."
Matthew 5:23:16-22
"Woe to you, blind guides! You say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? You also say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift on it, he is bound by his oath.' You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred? Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. And he who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven swears by God's throne and by the one who sits on it.

James 3:5-6
Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

James 3:9-12
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

Beyond Anger Management - June 14-15
Matthew 5:21-26
"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
Vital Signs - June 7-8
Matthew 5:13-20
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

The Fulfillment of the Law
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven."

How to be Really Well Off -May 24&25
Matthew 5:1-12
The Beatitudes
Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
      for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
      for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
      for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The World's Greatest Talk -May 17 & 18
Matthew 7:24-29
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

If you're enjoying our summer series on The Sermon on the Mount--The World's Greatest Talk, you may want to read more. Here are some staff recommendations for further reading:

The Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard:John Ortberg: A modern classic on the Sermon on the Mount and what it means for spiritual transformation. I often find that trying to understand Dallas requires a process something like osmosis--but is he ever worth it!Scott Palmbush: Dallas Willard shares his compelling vision of life in the Kingdom of God in his book The Divine Conspiracy. A significant part of this meaty tome expounds on Matthew 5-7 as interpreted through the "Kingdom" lens.
James Benton: The Divine Conspiracy by Dallas Willard changed the way I thought about the Sermon on the Mount and made me reconsider how I was approaching being a Christian. Dallas Willard is an intense, but terrific writer.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT by Bob Guelich:
John Ortberg: Bob was a great New Testament scholar at Fuller Seminary who passed away several years ago, and wrote a classic work devoted to making modern scholarship on the Sermon on the Mount accessible to folks.

MATTHEW: A COMMENTARY by Dale Bruner:
John Ortberg: Dale Bruner is one of our own (a Presbyterian!), and his commentary on Matthew has had a 'cult following'--in the best sense of the word--for years. It recently got reprinted by Eerdmans.

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP by Dietrich Bonhoeffer:
John Ortberg: Periodically someone recaptures for their time the glory and weight of Jesus' call. This is still a classic after more than half a century by a great scholar, martyred by Hitler who understood what it meant to be 'persecuted for righteousness' sake.'

STUDIES IN THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT by D. Martyn Lloyd-JonesNicole Laubscher: Lloyd-Jones describes the Sermon on the Mount as "nothing but a great and grand and perfect elaboration of what our Lord called his 'new commandment'. His new commandment was that we love one another even as He has loved us...If we are Christ's...we should love one another even as He loved us, here were are shown how to do it."
